Baby Slings Benefit Both Parent and Child

Visit any park or mall and you will see them: parents with their babies strapped securely to their chests in a baby sling. Baby slings are chic and vogue today, so they almost seem like a new invention in the world of baby gear. However, baby slings are not a new invention. They have been used for centuries by women across the globe who needed to have their hands free while caring for their infants. Today’s baby slings simply offer a comfortable evolution of these older versions.
Benefits of Using a Sling for the Parent
Parents who use baby slings benefit from having their hands free while they care for their babies. This allows them to interact with their other children, shop, do certain types of housework, or even sit at the computer while holding their babies. They also benefit from developing a close, trusting relationship with their new babies.
Another benefit of baby slings for parents is the fact that today’s baby slings are easy on the back. Carrying your baby constantly on your hip or shoulder is very trying on the muscles of the back. When used properly, a baby sling distributes the baby’s weight more evenly, and even takes some of the weight in the fabric of the sling. This means you could carry your baby all day long without feeling muscle strain in your back. As a side benefit, new mothers’ backs get a break when using a baby sling because they are not constantly bending over to pick up their babies.
Breastfeeding mothers benefit from using a baby sling because they provide a way to nurse in public while remaining discrete. Also, holding a baby close to the skin helps the mother produce the hormones that lead to proper milk production.
Benefits of Using a Sling for Babies
Baby slings benefit the infant as much, if not more, than they benefit the mother. Today’s baby slings provide the proper support for a new baby’s neck and back. Unlike front and back carriers, a sling does not force the baby’s legs into an unnatural position, which is very important in the first few months.
Babies benefit from being held in a secure, cozy position that imitates the womb. This can help them transition much more peacefully from the world inside their mothers to the world outside. They also develop a positive bond with their parents or main caregivers, which help them develop emotionally. Babies who are worn in a sling cry much less often than other babies. They can sleep while close to mom, and once they are soundly sleeping mom can transition them easily into their crib for a good nap.
Parents of fussy babies find that a baby sling helps them calm their crying child. When a child is carried in a baby sling, he is constantly moving, much as he was in the womb. This, accompanied by the secure, close hold that is created with a baby sling, allows the baby to calm himself and often fall asleep. Babies who need to be held frequently due to gas or colic can be held without completely limiting the mother’s ability to function as a member of the family.
Some parents may wonder if carrying their baby in a sling will make them too attached. This does not happen. Surprisingly, toddlers who were worn in baby slings as babies are usually much more comfortable separating from their parents when they need to do so. Experts believe this is because of the many emotional benefits of using baby slings.
If you’re a new parent, a baby sling should be on your list of necessary baby gear. Most slings are relatively inexpensive, the benefits are many, and the bonding it provides is a great way to show your affection to your baby.

Tips For Keeping Your Baby Healthy and Safe

Here are some key points to remember to help keep your baby healthy and safe. Remember, newborns, preemies, and young infants are very susceptible to illness. Be sure to:

* Wash your hands frequently when caring for your little one (especially after going to the bathroom and changing diapers). * Make sure all visitors wash their hands prior to touching your baby. * Make sure visitors are not ill when coming to visit. * Avoid large crowds for at least 1 month after your baby is born.

Help protected your baby from accidental injury. Be sure to:

* Always place your baby in an appropriate car seat when traveling in any vehicle. * Never leave baby unattended (especially in the car, bathtub, changing table, or on any other elevated area). * Always keep one hand on your baby when in the bathtub, on the changing table, or on any elevated area. * Never shake your baby. Shaken baby syndrome can cause blindness, brain damage or death. * Place baby on his/her back to sleep to reduce the likelihood of sudden infant death syndrome. * Always test the temperature of the water before giving a bath. * Use a non-skid mat in the bathtub. * Never prop a bottle when feeding your baby. * Never place pacifier on a string around baby’s neck. * Check pacifiers and nipples for holes and tears frequently. * Always test the temperature of breast milk/formula prior to feeding your baby. * Never leave pets or young children alone with your baby. * Ensure smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors are functioning properly. * Do not carry infant when you are cooking or holding hot drinks. * Make sure that your baby’s toys are unbreakable. * Remove toys from the crib when your baby is sleeping or unattended. * Never give an infant under 1 year of age honey. Honey has been associated with botulism.

Tips For Consoling Your Baby

Are you asking yourself “Will the crying ever stop”? Take a deep cleansing breath, relax, and read our tips to help you calm your little one.

Crying is your baby’s way of communicating with you. Your baby may be trying to tell you that he/she is hungry, in pain, too hot or too cold, has a dirty diaper, is sleepy, or is over stimulated. On average, babies cry for 1 to 4 hours a day. During some of these periods, nothing that you do seems to console your child; this can be extremely unnerving for many parents. Here are some tips to help calm your baby:

* Give your baby a pacifier to suck on or use your clean finger if you don’t have a pacifier handy. * Try burping your baby. Sometimes a gas bubble is stuck in your baby’s belly causing pain and discomfort. * Rock your baby. * Touch and stroke your baby. * Swaddle your baby. * Sing and talk to your baby. * Play soft relaxing music for your baby. * Carry your baby in your arms or use a carrier. I find that if I put a baby facing tummy-to-tummy with me in my arms (as if I am breastfeeding) and offer the baby a pacifier, the baby usually calms quickly. * Take your baby for a walk or for a car ride. A change of scenery is always nice. * Give your baby a warm bath. * Give your baby a massage. * If your baby is over stimulated, remove him/her from the object or situation that is causing the stimulation. * Use a vibrating infant seat or a baby swing.

If these tips don’t work for you, put your baby in a safe place (like his/her crib) and go to a quiet place to relax and regain your composure.

Some babies, no matter what you do, may not be easy to console at certain times throughout the day. Some are colicky or have reflux. Unfortunately, there is not much else to do for an infant that has colic besides trying to console and calm them. The good news is that colic usually resolves by 3-4 months of age. If you suspect that your child has reflux, consult your pediatrician for further information.

Toxic Baby Products?

“How’s that possible?” “I’ve been using what on babies?”

This was my reaction when I was researching baby products (during the development phase of Babies 411) and found out the news that most of the baby products that we know, love, and have used for years contain cancer-causing (carcinogenic) chemicals. What an eye opener.

As a NICU nurse, I care for babies that are compromised and are in their most vulnerable state. Now I find out that I have been unknowingly using and recommending unsafe products. Well, no more. I have taken a stand and made it a mission to educate mothers, caregivers and most of all healthcare professionals on the dangers lurking within our trusted baby shampoos, washes, lotions, wipes and more. As a healthcare professional, I know that parents are looking to us for the answers. And because of this, parents choose and purchase products that we use in the hospitals believing that this is the safest options. Why wouldn’t it be if we use them in the hospitals? Unfortunately, we are unknowingly and unintentionally promoting bad products.

Want to know how to protect your baby from these toxic products? Here are a few recommendations:

1. Knowledge is power so do your research! Read labels and avoid those products that contain harmful ingredients. Learn more by reading our article “Protecting our Babies from Toxic Chemicals” at www.Babies411.com

2. Less is more. Be sparing on products that you use on your baby.

3. How safe is your baby products? Check out Skin Deep to learn more about the products you are putting on your baby.

4. Keep up-to-date on news surrounding chemicals in baby products (not just skin care products, but also chemicals found in toys, clothing, food, plastics and other baby products).

5. Love disposable baby wipes but want to avoid the chemicals? Make your own wipes. Want to learn how? Read our article Making Homemade Baby Wipes for the easy, breezy recipe.

6. Are you expecting a baby? Ask your hospital or childbirth facility what baby products they use on babies. If it’s not a safe choice, bring your own and make your baby’s first bath a healthy, toxin-free bath.

7. Help us spread the word. We are working hard with our favorite company, Earth Mama Angel Baby, trying to educate healthcare facilities on the dangers of toxic baby products and looking to phase these products out of our hospital systems. With your help, we could move mountains! Contact your maternity unit and express your concerns.

Ahh, baby has finally fallen asleep. Time to do the dishes/eat dinner/go to sleep?but wait! Is that the baby waking up? Is she coughing? Is she breathing? Every new parent (and one or two veteran ones, too) knows this scenario. It?s lovely when your baby sleeps, but it sure would be nice to keep an eye on her, too.
